Famous quotes, proverbs honor mothers

Today is Mother’s Day. The first celebration honoring mothers was in ancient Greece honoring Rhea, the Mother of the Gods.

The first celebration of Mother’s Day in the United States was in 1907 when Anna Jarvis from Philadelphia began a campaign to establish a national Mother’s Day.

In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the 2nd Sunday of May as a national observance to honor mothers each year in our country.

Today, I would like to honor all mothers by sharing some quotes:

• “There never was a woman like her. She was gentle as a dove and brave as a lioness… The memory of my mother and her teachings were, after all, the only capital I had to start life with, and on that capital I have made my way”-Andrew Jackson

• “A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials, heavy and sudden, falls upon us, when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine, desert us when troubles thicken around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.”-Washington Irving

• “I looked on the child-rearing not only as a work of love and duty but as a profession that was fully as interesting and challenging as any honorable profession in the world and one that demanded the best that I could bring it.”-Rose Kennedy

• “An ounce of mother is worth a ton of priest.” -Spanish proverb

• “Youth fades; love droops, the leaves of friendship fall; A mother’s secret hope outlives them all.”-Oliver Wendell Holmes

• “The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.”- Theodore Hesburgh

• “God could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers.” -Jewish proverb

• “All that I am or hope to be I owe to my angel mother. I remember my mother’s prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life.”- Abraham Lincoln

Happy Mother’s Day.
