Wellness Can Be Enhanced With Creative Activities

Creative endeavors often produce a relaxing effect on individuals. Tense muscles begin to unwind, furrowed brows become smooth, and breathing and heart rate slow down.

Creative thoughts and actions are unique. Although close copies can sometimes be produced, no two people paint, sing, write or sculpt exactly alike. This uniqueness can be, in itself, part of a psychological base on which to build strength and confidence.

Exercising one’s creativity creates new perspectives for people, including the way they view themselves. An improvement in self-concept can be assisted by becoming involved in creative activities.

Creative exercises also can help those who have difficulty maintaining emotional balance remain more stable, even-tempered and productive. Anxiety and depression can also be reduced.

It is as if the creativity is an elixir from which some people draw their strength. When people are thinking creatively, they often feel a sense of elevation, escape and relief. These feelings can be the valves that release the pressure before emotional meltdowns.

Engaging in an artistic endeavor can create a healthy diversion from the more mundane activities of daily living. Putting a creative break in the day — such as at lunch time, during a coffee break or after work — can assist in obtaining relief from stressful activities.

Parents provide a great gift to their children when they encourage creativity as part of their children’s learning experience. Art, music and dance lessons are examples of ways to inspire creative talent. Drama and creative writing are other good examples that children may enjoy.

Creativity, like other cognitive activities, requires renewal as it is not uncommon for creativity to diminish as the mind becomes stale and uninspired. Burnout, fatigue, chronic stress, depression and physical illness can negatively affect creativity.

Recapturing creativity requires looking at things with a new, fresh perspective. This may require a change in routines, seeking new experiences, getting some rest, brainstorming with other creative people and recognizing that a creative slump need not be permanent.

People with creative talent can provide inspiration, entertainment and emotional wellness to those suffering from such problems as loneliness, mental illness and physical infirmities.

Sharing the gift of creativity with others can make life more meaningful to both the receiver and the giver.

If you do not have a creative outlet in your life, consider pursuing one. Make creativity a part of your lifestyle.
