Let Thanksgiving Set The Pattern For Reducing Seasonal Stress Syndrome
The 2010 holiday season is upon us. Beginning with Thanksgiving, these few weeks can create periods of stress, but some pre-planning can reduce the frequency and intensity of these episodes.
Thanksgiving can be a wonderful time as families gather together around a meal that often includes turkey, dressing and all the trimmings. At the same time, the day can be rather stressful for the hostess even with careful preplanning.
Let’s look at some possible stress points and their remedies:
Start by setting some goals. If you are planning to host a large family gathering, develop a game plan that will allow you to enjoy the festivities. Are you going to provide the home, food and beverages? Consider asking guests to bring some of the food and beverages. Let them know that when possible the food such as pies, casseroles and salads should be oven or refrigerator ready.
Too many cooks in the kitchen at one time can be a real headache and should be avoided.
Decide whether you want to let the Thanksgiving Day Dinner mark the beginning of the “battle of the bulge” for you and your guests.
Losing this battle can result in the beginning of demolished self-discipline and will power for the next six weeks that results in weight gain, lowered self esteem and even depression.
This stressor can be reduced by providing a wide variety of food and beverages at the meal so that those individuals who chose to watch their weight can do so.
If rocky relationships exist between some guests or family members, seat them apart from each other. Unresolved conflicts and family feuds can erupt.
Creating a demilitarized zone to temporarily neutralize bad chemistry between guests can increase the likelihood of a peaceful meal.
By the time the meal is over, if not before, the hostess is often exhausted Considerate guests should clean up “the mess” and give the hostess the opportunity to kick off her shoes, have an extra cup of coffee and visit with her guests.
Make Thanksgiving a time to count your blessings and share in fellowship that will be remembered in a positive manner in the future.
Start the holiday season right with some thoughtful pre-planning and seize the opportunity to strengthen ties with friends and family. Consider passing these hints on to your guests.
