The holiday time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is unique in many ways. For many individuals, this is the season for allergies, colds, flu, and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). SAD is a type of depression thought to be caused by shortened days and less exposure to sun light. Another problem affecting many individuals at this time of the year is holiday season stress syndrome, a constellation of psychological difficulties occurring between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day.
With the holiday season and Christmas upon us, perhaps it would be helpful to begin this potentially stressful time with a look at some humorous quotes:
Next to a circus there ain’t nothing that packs up and tears out faster than the Christmas Spirit. -Ken Hubbard
Christmas is the time when kids tell Santa what they want and adults pay for it. Deficits are when adults tell government what they want and their kids pay for it. - Richard Lamm
I once bought my kids a set of batteries for Christmas with a note on it saying, toys not included. - Bernard Manning
You know you’re getting old, when Santa starts looking younger. -Robert Paul
Christmas begins about the first of December with an office party and ends when you finally realize what you spent around April fifteenth of the next year.
- P.J. O’Rourke
Merry Christmas, Nearly Everybody! -Ogden Nash
A lovely thing about Christmas is that it’s compulsory, like a thunderstorm, and we all go through it together. - Garrison Keillor
Christmas is a race to see which gives out first- your money or your feet. -Unknown
Many banks have a new kind of Christmas club in operation. The new club helps you save money to pay for last year’s gifts. -Unknown
What do you call people who are afraid of Santa Claus? Claustrophobic. - Unknown
Christmas is a time when everybody wants his past forgotten and his present remembered. What I don’t like about office Christmas parties is looking for a job the next day. - Phyllis Diller
Seeking balance and a healthy perspective can make the holidays pleasant memories and positive learning experiences. Try to think of holidays in terms of opportunity and challenge rather than need to be excessive and perfectionistic. And, please remember that maintaining a sense of humor is important in dealing with holiday season stress syndrome.
